Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914)

Tillie's Punctured Romance is a silent American comedy directed by Mack Sennett. It stars Marie Dressler as Tillie Banks, with Mabel Normand and Charlie Chaplin, and features the Keystone Cops. It’s famous for being the first feature-length comedy and Keystone’s only feature film.

Based on Dressler’s stage play Tillie’s Nightmare, the film expands a Broadway hit into a full-length movie. It also marks the last time Charlie Chaplin acted in a film he did not write or direct; here he plays a city playboy who woos Tillie but has a girlfriend.

Plot in simple terms:
- Tillie, a country girl, learns she will inherit a large fortune from her Uncle Banks after a series of comic mishaps.
- A flashy city man tries to win Tillie and steal her money; he already has a girlfriend and brings Tillie to the city.
- Tillie and her fiancé marry, move into Uncle Banks’s mansion, and chaos ensues as the man’s real scheming comes to light.
- A big party, a gunfight, and a wild chase lead to Tillie being knocked into the water.
- In the end, the uncle is alive, the man leaves, and Tillie (and the other woman) realizes they’re better off without him.

Key facts:
- Director: Mack Sennett
- Stars: Marie Dressler (Tillie Banks), Mabel Normand, Charlie Chaplin; includes the Keystone Cops
- Based on: Tillie’s Nightmare by A. Baldwin Sloane and Edgar Smith
- Budget: about $50,000
- Significance: first feature-length slapstick comedy; the only feature produced by Keystone Film Company

Release and restoration:
- Premiered December 21, 1914. Original running time about 74 minutes; a 2003 restoration brought it to about 82 minutes.
- Initially distributed by Alco Film Corporation after Mutual could not handle Keystone features.
- Restorations and reissues followed, including a 1999 Image Entertainment DVD (paired with Mabel’s Married Life) and later higher-quality prints used in the Chaplin at Keystone set (2010).

Legacy:
- A landmark in film history for its length and slapstick style. Dressler continued to perform Tillie in later films, and a later film called Tillie’s Punctured Romance (1928) starring W.C. Fields shares only the title, not the plot. The film is occasionally referenced in popular culture, such as a nod in The Simpsons.
