U.S. Route 20A (New York)
U.S. Route 20A (US 20A) is an 83.59-mile east–west alternate to U.S. Route 20 in western New York. It starts near Hamburg, where US 20 and US 62 meet, and ends in East Bloomfield at US 20, NY 5, and NY 64, about five miles west of Canandaigua. The route mostly follows Big Tree Road and is partly named the Timothy J. Russert Highway near Abbott Road in the Buffalo area.
As US 20A travels east, it dives south of US 20 to serve several villages and towns, including Orchard Park, East Aurora, Geneseo, Warsaw, Honeoye, and Leicester, before continuing through Perry and Lakeville to Livonia. It connects with several major roads along the way, such as NY 400 outside East Aurora, I-390 near Lakeville and Geneseo, and NY 19 in Warsaw. In East Aurora, US 20A briefly runs with NY 16 and NY 78, then continues on Big Tree Road until it leaves the Buffalo suburbs.
Outside of towns, US 20A is a two-lane rural highway. In Geneseo and the surrounding area, it links with I-390 and provides access to the Genesee Valley. The eastern portion passes through Honeoye and the Bristol Valley before turning north onto NY 64 toward East Bloomfield, where it ends at US 20 and NY 5/NY 64.
History in brief:
- Parts of today’s US 20A were once different New York state routes (including NY 35 and NY 254) before the 1930s.
- US 20A took its current shape in the late 1930s to 1940, when US 20 was realigned and the old routing became US 20A.
- In 1994, the Retsof Salt Mine collapse near Cuylerville caused a temporary damage and detour on US 20A.
- In 2008, a section of the route (Abbott Road to California Road) was officially named the Timothy J. Russert Highway in memory of the Buffalo native.
