Tommy Fitzgerald (hurler)
Tommy Fitzgerald (Tomás Mac Gearailt in Irish), born in 1983 in Portlaoise, County Laois, is an Irish hurling manager and former player. He played as a wing-forward for Portlaoise in a dual role (hurling and Gaelic football), winning nine Laois Senior Football Championship medals, one Laois Senior Hurling Championship medal, and two Leinster Club SFC titles.
For Laois, Fitzgerald played senior hurling from 2002 to 2015, making about 50 appearances. He won National League Division 2 medals in 2002, 2007, and 2013, and also claimed an All-Ireland SBHC medal after beating Wicklow in the final. He left the panel in 2011 after a disagreement with manager Brendan Fennelly, but returned and finished his inter-county career in 2015.
After playing, Fitzgerald was part of Eddie Brennan’s Laois management team that won the Joe McDonagh Cup in 2019. He then moved into club coaching with Galway’s St Thomas’, guiding them to three straight Galway SHC titles and the All-Ireland Club SHC title in 2024, beating O’Loughlin Gaels 0-18 to 0-17.
In November 2024, Fitzgerald became the manager of the Laois senior hurling team.
