Tobu 8000 series
The Tobu 8000 series is a family of DC electric commuter trains used by Tobu Railway in Japan. Built from 1963 to 1983, a total of 712 cars were made, making it the most common private railway EMU in Japan. As of November 2024, 182 cars are still in service, forming 43 train sets, and six cars have been preserved.
Today the 8000 series runs in various sizes—2, 3, 4, and 6 cars per train—on many Tobu lines. The Isesaki Line uses two-car sets, while some 8000 series cars were rebuilt into 800/850 series for driver-only operation. Other lines also use driver-only operation with different configurations: two-car sets on the Kameido and Daishi lines, three-car driver-only sets on the Sano Line, two-car sets on the Kiryu and Koizumi Lines, and four-car sets on the Utsunomiya Line (which stopped using 8000s there in 2019). The Urban Park Line at Nanakōdai Stadium uses six-car sets, and the Tojo Line uses eleven four-car sets for local driver-only services north of Ogawamachi.
History and upgrades happened in stages. The first 8000 series trains were four cars long, added to with two-car sets in 1964. Between 1971 and 1972, many four-car sets were lengthened to six cars by adding new intermediate cars. Air conditioning was gradually added to six-car sets starting in 1972, and all remaining unair-conditioned sets were upgraded during the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1977 the first eight-car 8000 set appeared for the Tojo Line, and in 1983 the final new 8000 cars were built.
Over the years, the fleet also received refurbishments and new features. From 1986, life-extension work and redesigned cab ends followed. Beginning in the late 1990s, some sets got HID headlights and LED destination signs. In 2001, some 2-car sets were rebuilt for driver-only operation and gained bilingual passenger announcements, LED displays, and external speakers. In 2004–2005, several eight-car sets were reformed into three-car driver-only sets for Sano and Kiryu Line services.
Liveries changed many times. The trains started in a royal beige and international orange, then were repainted in sage cream in 1974, and later in jasmine white with blue stripes. Various special repaintings and commemorations occurred, including a temporary beige/orange paint for a 90th anniversary, and later special liveries for anniversaries and events. One preserved set, 8111, has appeared in several liveries for events, and a burgundy “Grape No. 1” livery was created for the 100th anniversary of the Tojo Line’s Yorii extension. The 8000 series remains a familiar sight on Tobu’s network, with some sets still in operation and others preserved for history.
