Timeline of entomology

Entomology is the science of insects and other related land arthropods. It has grown from the need to protect people from insect-borne diseases, guard crops against pests, and reduce insect-related discomfort, along with human curiosity. This timeline summarizes the history of entomology. Early entomologists proposed many different classification systems. Keep in mind that many old names still exist, but they may sit at different levels in the classification hierarchy. For example, many groups were first published as genera; the genus Mymar, proposed by Alexander Henry Haliday in 1829, is now treated as the family Mymaridae.
