This’ll Make You Whistle is a British musical comedy film from 1936, directed by Herbert Wilcox and starring Jack Buchanan with Elsie Randolph and William Kendall. It’s based on the stage musical of the same name, in which Buchanan also starred.
Plot in brief
A stylish man-about-town ends up engaged to two women at once: Laura, who loves horses, and Joan, who is sweet but ruled by her disapproving mother. He tries to convince Laura’s guardian that he’s unsuitable for marriage, while persuading Joan’s mother that he’s a good match. Mischief from two friends and the appearance of a beautiful life model named Bobbie Rivers add to the confusion. The action moves from London to the French seaside resort Le Touquet.
Stage origins
The musical premiered in Southsea in December 1935, then had a long run in London’s West End at the Palace Theatre and later at Daly’s. The film features the same story and cast, and in Australia the show was known as The Melody of London.
