Love Point Light
Love Point Light is a screw-pile lighthouse near the northern tip of Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. It sits at about 39°03′14″N, 76°17′25″W. Built in 1872, its cast-iron and wooden screw-pile foundation supports a hexagonal keeper’s house. It first lit in 1872 and was deactivated in 1964. The light stood about 10.5 meters (34 feet) high and used a 3½-order Fresnel lens. Its signal was a six-second white flash with a red sector.
Local pressure to build a light here dates back to 1837, but money approved in 1857 was not enough. Construction finally began in 1872, following the same plan as the Choptank River Light. Like many screw-pile lighthouses, it faced ice damage in its first winter, with several piles damaged; it was threatened again in 1879 but survived.
Automation came in 1953, and the keeper’s house was removed in 1964. A small light and fog bell were placed on the old foundation.
