The Trashwomen
The Trashwomen were an all-female garage punk and surf punk trio from the San Francisco Bay Area. They formed in 1991 when Tina Lucchesi (drums) and Dannielle Pimm (bass) decided to create a band after planning a one-off Trashmen cover show. They asked guitarist Elka Zolot—who had played with Bitch Fight and later Eight Ball Scratch—to join. Zolot had strong guitar skills, and the band quickly built a following.
Their debut album Spend the Night With the Trashwomen came out in 1993 on Estrus Records and was described as raw, sleazy rock and roll. A live album followed in 1994, and in 1995 they released Trashwomen Vs. Deep Space, with Pin Up Records also releasing their 1994 EP The Trashwomen Invade Chinatown. The band split in 1997 after a Japan tour, feeling they had run their course, but they reunited for a performance in 2007 and stayed together into 2008. They called themselves the Queens of Tease Rock.
The Wongs paid tribute to them with the song Jerkin' It to the Trashwomen.
Tina Lucchesi later fronted The Bobbyteens and Tina & the Total Babes (an all-male band) and released an album in 2001 on Sympathy for the Record Industry. She has also played in several other bands, started Lipstick Records, and runs a hair salon and vintage shop, Down at Lulu's, in Oakland. Elka Zolot's daughter Natassia is the rapper and video director Kreayshawn.
