The Three E.P.'s
The Three E.P.'s is a compilation album by the Scottish band The Beta Band. It collects their first three releases—Champion Versions, The Patty Patty Sound, and Los Amigos del Beta Bandidos—into one long album. It was released in the United Kingdom on 28 September 1998 by Regal and in the United States on 26 January 1999 by Astralwerks. The cover art uses the main image from each of the three EPs. The album runs 78 minutes and blends folk rock, electronic, post-rock, and experimental sounds. It was produced by The Beta Band with Chris Allison.
The Three E.P.'s gained wider attention after a scene from the 2000 film High Fidelity, where the store owner mentions selling five copies and plays “Dry the Rain.” Astralwerks noted that US sales jumped after the film’s release. Frontman Steve Mason later explained that he wanted music that was honest and experimental, not just part of Britpop.
Critical recognition followed: in 2000, Q magazine listed The Three E.P.'s as number 74 in its 100 Greatest British Albums Ever, and Pitchfork ranked it 23rd on its Top 100 Albums of the 1990s.
