The Preaching of the Antichrist

The Preaching of the Antichrist is a fresco by Luca Signorelli, painted around 1500–1504. It is part of Signorelli’s apocalyptic cycle in the Chapel of San Brizio at Orvieto Cathedral (the work measures about 13.7 by 12 meters). In the scene, the Antichrist preaches like Christ, but the words are whispered by the devil. Instead of rays of golden light, blood-red light shines as Archangel Michael heads toward Earth to fight the Antichrist. In the lower left corner stand two dark-clad men: one appears to be a self-portrait of the artist, the other possibly Fra Angelico. This fresco helped inspire Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment.
