Jean de Tournes (1593–1669)
Jean de Tournes (1593–1669) was a Genevan printer, publisher and bookseller from the famous de Tournes family. He was the son of Jean de Tournes (1539–1615) and the grandson of Jean de Tournes (1504–1564); he was also the son-in-law of Samuel Crespin. Born in Geneva, he took over the family business in 1615. In 1619 he sold his Lyon house, the sign of the Deux Vipères, to Guichard Julliéron. He retired in 1653, and his sons Jean Antoine and Samuel de Tournes continued the business. The de Tournes press used the emblem of two entwined vipers and the mottoes Quod tibi fieri non vis, alteri ne feceris and Virum de mille unum reperi. He died in 1669.
