The Lone Ranger (serial)
The Lone Ranger is a 1938 American movie serial from Republic Pictures, based on the famous radio show. It consists of 15 chapters (264 minutes) and was later shortened into a 69-minute feature called Hi-Yo-Silver, released in 1940. A sequel serial, The Lone Ranger Rides Again, followed the next year.
Plot in simple terms: In 1865 Texas, a Confederate deserter named Captain Mark Smith takes power and hides behind the name Colonel Marcus Jeffries after murdering the real man. Texas Rangers are ambushed, and only one survivor is left, rescued and cared for by Tonto. The Ranger fights to defeat Smith/Jeffries, but his true identity is hidden among five resistance leaders: Allen King, Bob Stuart, Bert Rogers, Dick Forrest, and Jim Clark. Only Tonto and the Texans know which one is the Ranger, and they work as a team to end Smith’s rule. In the last chapter, the Ranger reveals himself to Joan Blanchard as Allen King.
Production notes: The project began with a contract between Republic Pictures and The Lone Ranger Inc. The plan was for the Ranger to unmask in the final chapter. The budget was about $160,000, with final costs of about $168,000. Filming took place in late 1937—November 28 to December 31—for 19 days, making it Republic’s shortest serial shoot at the time. Most outdoor scenes were filmed at the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, California, with additional footage at the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine to give it a distinct look from the later TV series.
Release and impact: The Lone Ranger was released on February 12, 1938. It was a big hit for Republic and helped renew interest in the radio show, even inspiring a comic strip. The 69-minute feature version, Hi-Yo-Silver, came out on April 10, 1940. A sequel serial, The Lone Ranger Rides Again, followed, and the project influenced later adaptations by shaping how the Ranger’s origin and music were handled. The serial is noted for its tight plotting and for introducing evolving story elements that were less common in Western serials.
