The Legendary Marlene Dietrich
The Legendary Marlene Dietrich is a 1967 compilation album by German-American actress and singer Marlene Dietrich, released by Music For Pleasure (MFP). It gathers ten tracks Dietrich recorded between 1928 and 1931 as singles, and for the first time brings them together on LP, offering a clear look at her early cabaret and film music.
Highlights include "Wenn die beste Freundin," a duet with Margo Lion that features lesbian-themed cabaret content, and songs Dietrich recorded for the 1930 film The Blue Angel, such as the English versions "Falling in Love Again" and "Blonde Women" (the English version of "Nimm dich in acht vor blonden Frau'n").
The rest of the tracks come from early 1930 and 1931 sessions. In January 1930 she cut songs for The Blue Angel; February 1930 yielded German classics like "Ich bin die fesche Lola," "Kinder, heut’ abend such’ ich mir was aus" (with an English version later recorded and released in 1958), and "Ich Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuss Auf Liebe Eingestellt." The recording "Wenn ich mir was wünschen dürfte" also comes from February 1930. In March 1931 there are "Quand l'amour meurt," "Leben ohne Liebe kannst du nicht," and "Give Me the Man" (a Morocco song that was not used in full).
The album was released in the UK in 1967 (MFP 1172) with the subtitle Songs from The Blue Angel and Morocco with Other Unforgettable 1928-31 Recordings. It was reissued in the US and Australia in 1975 by Stanyan Records (new cover) and Australia (new catalog numbers). In 1979 Brazil released it as Os Mitos: Marlene Dietrich with the same cover as the US/Australian editions. In the UK it was later re-released as Falling in Love Again with a new cover.
Critically, The Encyclopedia of Popular Music gave it four stars. Elseviers Magazine in 1982 highlighted the lasting quality of Dietrich’s recordings, noting that later reinterpretations often miss the mystique of her voice heard in these originals.
Credits for the album come from the 1967 LP and the 1975 LP releases.
