The Kids Are Alright (2021 film)
The Kids Are Alright (Spanish: ¡A todo tren! Destino Asturias) is a 2021 Spanish comedy directed by and starring Santiago Segura, with Leo Harlem. It’s a remake of the French film Attention au départ!.
Plot
Ricardo must take his son and a group of kids to a camp in Asturias. Also traveling is Felipe, the grandfather of one child, who joins the trip. But they both miss the train, leaving the kids on their own. The story follows the kids’ adventures on the train and an opposite thread about the adults’ efforts to reunite with them.
Production
The movie was produced by Bowfinger International Pictures, Atresmedia Cine, Buendía Estudios, Todos Al Tren La Película A.I.E., and Glow. It was filmed mainly in Asturias (Illas, Avilés, Puente de los Fierros) and also in Illescas (Toledo) and Madrid. The theme song “Tu tren” was performed by Carlos Jean and Bebe. Warner Bros. Pictures España distributed the film, which released in Spain on July 8, 2021.
Reception
The film became the highest-grossing Spanish film of 2021. Critics were mixed:
- Cinemanía gave 2/5, criticizing a lack of originality and the kids’ subplot.
- Fotogramas praised it, giving 4/5, and highlighted the scenes led by Leo Harlem and the two interwoven stories.
- HobbyConsolas scored 45/100, noting it felt like Segura’s usual family comedy, with praise for David Guapo but complaints about jokes on inclusive language and a stale tone.
- El Correo gave 1/3, saying the comedy faltered and the movie split kid-focused gags from the adult-led humor.
