49 Andromedae (A Andromedae) is a star in the constellation Andromeda. It’s visible to the naked eye under good conditions with a magnitude of about 5.27. Based on its parallax, it lies roughly 333 light-years away and is slowly moving closer to us at about 11.5 km/s. This star is a red-clump giant with a spectral type of K0 III, meaning it’s fusing helium in its core. It has around 2.1 solar masses, about 11 solar radii, and shines with roughly 71 times the Sun’s luminosity. Its surface temperature is about 4,880 K. At an age of about 1.75 billion years, it rotates slowly (v sin i ~ 2 km/s). The spectrum shows slightly strong cyanogen (CN) lines. Historically, 49 Andromedae was known as Adhil, from the Arabic phrase meaning “the train [of a garment],” and was listed as Thail in a NASA memorandum. It has other catalog names including HD 9057, HIP 6999, and HR 430.
