The Hospital Research Foundation
The Hospital Research Foundation is an Australian non-governmental organization based in Woodville, South Australia. Founded on 1 January 1965, it raises funds to support medical and health research at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research, with the aim of improving health for South Australians and people across Australia.
The foundation funds program grants, research grants, laboratory equipment, and scholarships for postgraduate, honours, and vacation students. It rebranded in 2010, adopting the name The Hospital Research Foundation with the tagline “finding cures, improving care.”
Key focus areas include breast cancer and prostate cancer research, as well as kidney, transplant, and diabetes research through Kidney, Transplant & Diabetes Research Australia (KTDRA). The Centre for Creative Health works to improve healthcare through arts, design, and health programs at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. The Road Home supports the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families. The Stroke Research Programme (SRP), a collaboration with SAHMRI, the University of Adelaide, CALHN, and the Basil Hetzel Institute, helps establish Stroke Treatment Units and aims to improve stroke outcomes and explore new therapies.
The Under Our Roof program provides accommodation for country cancer patients treated at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and supports Australia’s largest breast cancer clinic. Fundraising has included events like the Mercer SuperCycle.
Leadership includes Chair Stephen Rodda and Chief Executive Officer Paul Flynn. The foundation has about 20 employees and around 12 board members. Website: hospitalresearch.org.au.
