The Climb is the sixth episode of the third season of Game of Thrones. It aired on May 5, 2013, and was directed by Alik Sakharov from a script by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.

The episode follows many storylines. On the Wall, Jon Snow and Ygritte struggle to climb the icy ramparts after a deadly avalanche, but they manage to reach the top and share a kiss. In King’s Landing, Tyrion suspects Joffrey ordered the attack that nearly killed him, while Tywin talks of taking charge as Hand; Cersei tries to reassure Tyrion, and Sansa learns more about the danger she’s in. Petyr Baelish and Varys continue their scheming, and Sansa watches as Littlefinger departs with Ros.

Away from the capital, Melisandre arrives with the Brotherhood Without Banners and buys Gendry for a blood magic spell, while Arya questions Melisandre’s methods. At Riverrun, Robb negotiates with Walder Frey, who demands an apology, the return of Harrenhal, and Edmure’s marriage to a Frey daughter. At Harrenhal, Roose Bolton offers to send Jaime to King’s Landing if Tywin clears Bolton, and Brienne remains imprisoned. Bran’s group faces tension, and Jojen warns Bran about a vision involving Jon beyond the Wall.

Theon continues to be tortured, and Sam reveals a dragonglass dagger to Gilly as they travel toward the Wall. Ygritte and Jon discuss their loyalties as they climb, and when an avalanche hits, some wildlings die. Jon and Ygritte survive and reach the top, where they share a moment.

The episode was well received, with critics praising performances, especially Tywin Lannister and Olenna Tyrell. It set strong viewing numbers for the series, drawing about 5.5 million viewers on its first airing and earning high marks from review outlets. Rotten Tomatoes gave it around 90% positive, IGN rated it 8.8 out of 10, and The A.V. Club published favorable reviews.
