The Challenge (2003 film)
The Challenge is a 2003 comedy starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It was released directly to video and is their last direct-to-video film. The story follows twins Shane and Lizzie Dalton, who live far apart after their parents’ divorced. Shane is a relaxed, nature-loving vegetarian living in Los Angeles, while Lizzie is a disciplined student in Washington, D.C. Both secretly sign up for a Mexico-based reality game show called The Challenge, which tests contestants with teamwork and survival to win college scholarships.
The show’s producer, Max, and intern Marcus decide to put the sisters on the same team, Team Mayan, to boost ratings. Their opponents on Team Aztec include Shane’s new friend Adam. At first, Shane and Lizzie clash, but they start to work together and learn from each other. Meanwhile, Shane and Adam become friends, which worries Lizzie. A behind-the-scenes romance between Lizzie and Marcus is uncovered, and Max plans to use it to cause trouble.
A photo of Shane kissing Adam leads to their disqualification from the next round, but Team Mayan keeps winning in the following challenges. As the game continues, Lizzie and Marcus’s scheme unravels, and Lizzie ends her relationship with Marcus. The final challenge is a tough obstacle course designed to test fears—Shane fears heights and Lizzie fears snakes. The sisters support each other, and Team Mayan wins the final challenge, earning scholarships for all contestants.
In the end, the sisters make up, and they turn the tables on Max by dumping slime on him. The film closes with a message about sisterhood and a line that the twins’ boyfriends from past projects aren’t as important as their bond. This was the Olsen twins’ last direct-to-video movie.
