The Bollweevils (indie band)
The Bollweevils were a British indie band from Sheffield, active from 1985 to 1993. Although they formed in 1985, they only became a proper live act in 1988. The early lineup included Sarah Griffiths (vocals), Mark Johnson (lead guitar), Steve McKevitt (bass), Dave Lloyd (rhythm guitar) and Chris Coyle (drums). They received positive reviews from their first gig.
In 1989 they signed with the independent label Vinyl Solution. Their first single, Talk To Me, was released in March 1990 as a self-produced four-track EP on the Decoy label. Stephen Singleton of ABC helped record the second single, but it wasn’t finished until 1991 and both the band and the label were unhappy with the result. The tracks were remixed in June by punk/dance producer Alan Scott, but the Life’s A Scream EP was never released in that form.
In August 1991, they added a second guitarist, Mark Shaw (formerly of Circus Circus Circus), and Pete Darnborough (from MDMA) joined on drums. In September they recorded another EP with Jim Beattie (ex-Primal Scream) as producer. The track "Mouth" was released in November.
Early in 1992 they recorded one more song, "Missing Out," for Vinyl Solution, but it was never released as a single. A compilation CD, Life’s A Scream, containing tracks from the first three EPs, was released in Japan in 1992 on Toy’s Factory. The Bollweevils disbanded in 1993.
