The Boat Race 1868
The Boat Race 1868
The 25th Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge was held on April 4, 1868, on the River Thames. Oxford won by six lengths in a time of 20 minutes 56 seconds, bringing the overall record to 15 wins for Oxford and 10 for Cambridge. This win gave Oxford their eighth straight victory.
Oxford’s cox, Charles Tottenham, became the first person to win five Boat Races. Cambridge had their first non-British rower, cox Thomas Warner, who had studied in Australia. The race began with Cambridge ahead for a short time, but Oxford soon pulled into the lead and stayed in front, finishing six lengths clear at Barnes Bridge. The race took place on the 4.2-mile Championship Course on the River Thames in southwest London.
