The Adventures of Brer Rabbit is a 2006 direct-to-video animated comedy from Universal Cartoon Studios. It features an all-black voice cast and has hip-hop influences.

The story follows a girl named Janey, who hears tales about Brer Rabbit from Brer Turtle. Brer Rabbit and his animal friends move from the sky to Earth, where they spend their days outsmarting predators like Brer Fox and Brer Wolf. The film is told as a series of Brer Rabbit’s adventures, with Brer Turtle explaining how the animals once lived as constellations watched over by Sister Moon.

In the tales, Brer Rabbit uses clever tricks to stay alive and help others. He traps Fox, avoids being eaten, and even helps Brer Bear at one point by switching roles. He and the other animals play together during a nighttime fishing trip, and Brer Rabbit’s wits help him outsmart his enemies again and again.

As Brer Rabbit’s tricks unfold, the other animals start to respect him, except for Brer Fox. When Fox tries to capture Brer Bear to feed his family, Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear turn the tables by tricking Fox into chasing the dangerous Brer Lion, leaving Fox hurt. Later, Fox catches Brer Rabbit, but Rabbit convinces him to go to his “laughing place” and leads Fox into a bee hive. Brer Wolf then nearly eats Rabbit, but Rabbit outsmarts him as well, using a log and a hidden treasure ruse. Fox and Wolf later team up to trap Brer Rabbit with a tar “baby,” but Rabbit escapes and gets them to jump into a briar patch.

Back in the present, Brer Turtle helps Janey see that Brer Rabbit’s tricks come from understanding what others want. Janey uses a similar idea at home to outsmart her brother about dinner, which is tuna casserole.

The movie ends with Sister Moon watching from space, winking at the audience, and Brer Rabbit and Turtle racing back to the woods. The Adventures of Brer Rabbit was nominated for Best Home Entertainment Production at the Annie Awards.
