That Thing Called Tadhana
That Thing Called Tadhana is a 2014 Filipino romantic comedy directed by Antoinette Jadaone, starring Angelica Panganiban as Mace and JM de Guzman as Anthony. The story starts when Mace, distraught after a painful breakup, meets Anthony at an airport in Rome and asks him to share his extra baggage allowance. They decide to travel home to the Philippines together, and their road trip to Baguio and Sagada becomes a journey about love, memory, and learning to let go. Along the way they talk about past relationships, sing together in a karaoke bar, and grow closer as they help each other face what they’ve been avoiding. In Sagada, they confront their feelings and the question of whether fate or choice drives love. By the end, Mace decides to try to forget her ex, and Anthony hints at a future together as they finish a story Mace wrote in college.
The film had a small budget of about ₱2 million but became a big hit, grossing roughly ₱134 million. It features the song “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” by Whitney Houston, funded by fan donations. Released first at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival in 2014 and later nationwide in 2015, it was praised for its simple, realistic take on romance and strong performances by the leads. It earned an A rating from the Cinema Evaluation Board and a PG rating from the MTRCB. There have been talks of a sequel, with the director and stars expressing openness under the right conditions.
