Tell Me What You Want (Weezer song)
Tell Me What You Want is a song by the American rock band Weezer, written for the video game Wave Break. It was released as a single on June 11, 2021, and runs about 3 minutes and 23 seconds. The track blends surf rock and hard rock, was written by Rivers Cuomo, produced by Suzy Shinn, and released on Atlantic and Crush labels.
Weezer partnered with Funktronic Labs, the makers of Wave Break, which is described as a skateboarding-style boat game. A special “Weezy Mode” based on the song was added to the game. The song originally appeared as a B-side related to Weezer’s Van Weezer album and was created as a livestream-friendly, or “stream-safe,” option to avoid copyright claims on platforms like Twitch. It premiered live at Summer Game Fest on June 10, 2021, with a Weezer performance, and a vinyl release through iam8bit followed in spring 2022.
Critics described its sound as a sharp mix of metal-influenced surf rock and hard rock, with NME noting the edge and Stereogum praising its riff-driven style that continues Van Weezer’s hard-rock approach. Lyrically, the song targets Pitchfork, including lines about a manager’s disapproval and office “dorks.” Consequence of Sound’s Wren Graves suggested the track answers Pitchfork’s 5.9/10 review of Van Weezer, and Exclaim!’s Josiah Hughes argued that dunking Pitchfork has long been common, though Weezer’s one-liner might feel a bit out of date.
