Ted Schreiber was an American baseball player who mainly played third base and shortstop. He was born on July 11, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, and died on September 8, 2022, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He batted and threw right-handed, stood 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighed 175 pounds. Schreiber attended James Madison High School in Brooklyn and St. John’s University. He signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1959 and spent four seasons in their farm system, including a standout 1962 season as the regular second baseman for the Seattle Rainiers, batting .279 in 147 games. The New York Mets drafted him in the Rule 5 draft in 1962 and he played in 1963 for the Mets and their Buffalo Bisons affiliate. He made his major league debut on April 14, 1963, and his last game on September 29, 1963. In 50 MLB at-bats that year, he hit .160 with two RBIs and no extra-base hits. On September 18, 1963, he pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth against the Phillies and grounded into a double play, becoming the last batter in Polo Grounds history. After his MLB season, he spent two more years in the International League before retiring from baseball after 1965. In his minor league career, he batted .260 with 36 home runs in 668 games. Schreiber then worked as a full-time junior high school teacher in Brooklyn for 27 years, including at Montauk Junior High School. He passed away on September 8, 2022.
