Marco Werman is an American radio host, reporter, and senior producer for public radio. He hosts The World and has been the full-time host since January 1, 2013, after years as a fill-in host and producer of the Global Hit segment.

Werman began in journalism at 16 as a copy boy in Raleigh, North Carolina. He graduated from Duke University in 1983 and then joined the Peace Corps, serving in Togo and Burkina Faso for three years. While in Burkina Faso, he freelanced for the BBC World Service and later helped produce Network Africa in London. In 1990 he returned to the United States to launch WCFE-FM in Plattsburgh, New York, hosting a daily two-hour news and public affairs show for four years. He moved to Rome in 1994 as a Monitor Radio correspondent, and in 1995 helped shape The World, where he has worked since. In 1997 he began the Global Hit segment, linking world music with current events and later turning it into a popular podcast.

Werman has won several awards, including a Sony Award for an exposé on child labor in West African gold mines, a New York Festivals award for a BBC documentary on the 1987 assassination of Burkina Faso’s president, and the Unity Award from the RTNDA for diversity coverage. He earned an Emmy in 2007 for Libya: Out of the Shadow on Frontline/World. He also co-created and hosted Sound Tracks: Music Without Borders for PBS, with a pilot in 2010 and a new episode in 2012. He has worked on PBS arts features and interviews, including Sound Tracks Quick Hits. He hosted BBC World Service “Boston Calling” until 2020. He is married to Schuyler Engel and is a lifelong surfer.
