Tarifverbund Passepartout
Tarifverbund Luzern/Obwalden/Nidwalden, known as Passepartout, is a Swiss fare network in central Switzerland. It serves the cantons of Lucerne, Obwalden and Nidwalden. The network started in 1986. Its headquarters are in Lucerne and the website is passepartout.ch.
Tickets and how they work
Passepartout offers many ticket types, from single tickets to day tickets and multi-journey tickets, plus monthly or annual travelcards. Tickets are valid on buses, ships and trains of member operators and only inside the Passepartout area. Prices are set by zones, and the whole area uses 29 zones.
In 2023, about 290,000 people held a seasonal card.
Short history
- 1986: Passepartout founded.
- 1988: Cross-cantonal seasonal tickets start.
- 2002: Core zone around Lucerne is added as Integraler Tarifverbund in der Agglomeration Luzern.
- 13 December 2009: Single tickets cover all three cantons; zone tickets become available and Passepartout becomes an integrated fare network.
- 2010: Management moves to Verkehrsverbund Luzern.
- 14 December 2014: A new 29-zone map is used for both single tickets and season tickets.
Other features
- Day tickets are valid for the chosen day in the zones you buy.
- Multi-journey tickets can be cheaper than buying several single tickets (up to 10% off).
- Travelcards can be bought annually or monthly via Swisspass.
- Discounts and special passes include Junior Travelcard (under 25), a dog travelcard, and 9-Uhr-Abo (valid from 9:00 on weekdays).
- Modul-Abo is a season ticket for commuters traveling to other networks.
Zone 10 and overlaps
- Short-distance tickets exist only in zone 10 (Lucerne area) and are valid for up to 6 bus stops. Zone-10-only tickets cost more, and zone 10 counts as two zones if bought with other zones.
- Long-distance tickets are available for the outskirts of zone 10 and cost about the same as a 1-zone ticket.
- There are overlapping zones with Tarifverbund Schwyz and Tarifverbund A-Welle, where Passepartout tickets and other networks’ tickets can be used together. These overlaps must be bought with another zone.
