Tanah Grogot
Tanah Grogot, also known as Tana Paser, is a district and the capital of Paser Regency in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It lies in the southern part of the regency on the eastern side of Borneo, bordered by Kuaro to the north and Pasir Belengkong to the south. The area covers about 358.38 square kilometers and sits around 5 meters above sea level.
In 2020, about 76,344 people lived there. The population is mostly Muslim (about 97%), with small numbers of Protestant Christians (about 2%), Catholic Christians (about 0.6%), and others or none (about 0.1%).
Tanah Grogot became the capital on June 26, 1959, by law. The name comes from tanah (land) and grogot (the sound of diesel boat engines), a reference to crossing the Kandilo area. It is still commonly called Tanah Grogot, even though there was a push to rename the district to Tana Paser; the renaming took effect for the district seat in early 2013, while the local village name stayed the same.
The district has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy rainfall throughout the year. The wettest month is March (about 305 mm of rain) and the driest is August (about 92 mm). Tanah Grogot is divided into 15 villages and 1 subdistrict.
