TMCO1
TMCO1 stands for transmembrane and coiled-coil domain-containing protein 1. In humans, it is located on chromosome 1 at the q24.1 region. The TMCO1 gene makes a membrane protein with transmembrane and coiled-coil regions that sits in cellular membranes, especially in the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. This protein helps regulate calcium ions and maintain calcium balance inside the cell, particularly in the ER.
TMCO1 is conserved in other species, including mice, where the similar protein has a related function. The gene is expressed in many tissues, including the kidney and several glands, as well as parts of the digestive and respiratory systems, indicating it has widespread roles in the body. In short, TMCO1 is a chromosome 1 gene that produces a membrane protein important for calcium homeostasis in cells.
