Suzanne Juyol
Suzanne Juyol (1 January 1920 – 20 July 1994) was a French opera singer and one of France’s leading dramatic sopranos. She studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and made her professional debut at the Paris Opera (Palais Garnier) in 1942 as Margared in Le roi d’Ys. She then sang Pénélope, Ariadne, Marguerite in La damnation de Faust and in Faust. Her Opéra-Comique debut followed in 1946 as Charlotte in Werther; she also performed Carmen, Tosca, and Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana there. In 1947 she debuted at Monte Carlo Opera, where she began singing Wagner roles such as Kundry, Brünnhilde and Ortrud. Her success led to an invitation to sing Tristan und Isolde at the Berlin Staatsoper in 1951 opposite Max Lorenz. She retired from the stage in 1960 at age 40. She was married to Victor Serventi, a voice teacher at the Paris Opera.
