The Deniers

The Deniers is a 2008 non-fiction book by Lawrence Solomon. It argues against the idea that global warming is mainly caused by human emissions and highlights scientists who dispute parts of the mainstream view. The book expands Solomon’s National Post columns that question whether the science is truly settled and that profile researchers who challenge IPCC conclusions or media coverage of climate issues.

The book covers topics such as the hockey-stick temperature graph, climate models, hurricane trends, the Stern Review, and the idea that solar variation or cosmic rays could influence climate. It provides short bios for many scientists and includes end notes with references and web addresses.

A few scientists profiled in the book later said Solomon misquoted or misrepresented their views. Sami Solanki and Nir Shaviv said the portrayals were inaccurate, and Nigel Weiss argued that solar activity cannot offset human-caused warming. The National Post retracted one claim and apologized for it. Solanki and Shaviv were included in the book, but Weiss was not.

Solomon shares his own perspective in the final chapter. The title The Deniers sparked controversy, with critics saying the book mischaracterizes what the dissenting scientists actually believe. Reviews were mixed: some praised highlighting dissent, while others criticized the book as biased or inaccurate.
