Sugar Island (Ohio)
Sugar Island is a small private island in Lake Erie, in southwestern Ohio. Located in Ottawa County's Put-in-Bay Township, it lies off the northwest shore of Middle Bass Island. The island covers about 0.123 square kilometers (roughly 30 acres) and is owned by the Keny family. It was once part of a hunting club and was later bought by Gebhard Keny, founder of Columbus Plastic Products and the original producer of Lustro-Ware, an early version of Tupperware. Sugar Island used to be connected to Middle Bass Island by a short isthmus, but after trees were cleared from the connecting strip, Lake Erie reclaimed the loose soil and sank the isthmus, leaving Sugar Island separate.
