Subuk was a ghulam (slave soldier) who became the governor of Azerbaijan in 919 and ruled for about three years. When his master, Yusuf Ibn Abu'l-Saj, was captured by the caliph’s forces, Subuk took control of Azerbaijan to protect him. After defeating a caliphal army, the caliph al-Muqtadir recognized him as governor. Subuk waited three years for Yusuf to return. Yusuf was released and came back to Azerbaijan in 922, by which time Subuk had died.
