Strathmore Athletic F.C.
Strathmore Athletic F.C. was a Dundee football club that played in the late 19th century. It began as Strathmore Juniors, the senior side of Strathmore, formed in 1889, and was renamed Strathmore Athletic in August 1891. The name Strathmore Athletic was also used by other teams in Scotland, which caused some confusion.
The club joined the Scottish Football Association in August 1892, during a crowded Dundee senior scene. Their Hillside Park ground was not ready for matches, so they could not host home ties at first.
In the 1892–93 Scottish Cup, Strathmore Athletic had an unexpected run. They beat Strathmore 4–3 in the first round after a late counter-attack; a protest over a player’s registration was dismissed. They then won 4–0 in a replay at Vale of Ruthven to reach the third round, where they faced Arbroath and were heavily defeated, 6–0 by half-time and 16–0 by full time.
In the Forfarshire Cup, they beat Kirriemuir after protesting that the ground was too narrow, but then lost to the Harp. A protest led to a replay, which Harp won 11–0.
The club finished the 1892–93 season with a defeat to Arbroath Wanderers in May and disappeared by the end of May 1893. The team wore royal blue jerseys with dark blue knickers. As Strathmore Juniors, they had played at Rollo’s Pier; Hillside was opened at the start of the 1891–92 season with a 5–2 win over Our Boys of Alyth. The club’s officers included Hon. Secretary A. M. Lupton and Match Secretary A. N. M’Kenzie.
