Strategic Reconnaissance Command
Strategic Reconnaissance Command (Kommando Strategische Aufklärung, KSA) is the central military intelligence HQ of the German Bundeswehr. Based in Grafschaft, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, it coordinates all military intelligence for Germany since January 2002, when intelligence for the Army, Navy, and Air Force was unified.
Key capabilities:
- Satellite-based imaging reconnaissance (SAR Lupe)
- Telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance
- Electronic warfare
- Object analysis
- Operational communications
Relationships and leadership:
- Works closely with the Federal Intelligence Service (BND)
- Military counterintelligence is handled by the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD)
- Responsible for joint development of military intelligence and training
- Since July 2017, under the Cyber and Information Domain Service (Kommando Cyber- und Informationsraum)
- Current commander: Major General Werner Sczesny
Engagements:
- NATO interventions in Bosnia and Kosovo
- Operations in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Anaconda, TF K-Bar, Northern Afghanistan)
