Stefen Romero
Stefen Daniel Romero is an American former professional baseball right fielder. Born on October 17, 1988, in Tucson, Arizona, he batted and threw right-handed. Romero played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Seattle Mariners and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles and the Orix Buffaloes.
Romero went to Sunnyside High School in Tucson, where he played baseball (and also basketball). He then attended Pima Community College and later Oregon State University, where he played for the Beavers. In 2009 he played summer baseball with the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League. The Seattle Mariners drafted him in the 12th round of the 2010 MLB draft.
He began his pro career in the minor leagues, winning Mariners Minor League Player of the Year in 2012 with the Jackson Generals. He reached Triple-A in 2013 with the Tacoma Rainiers and made the Mariners’ Opening Day roster in 2014, making his MLB debut on April 1, 2014. He spent parts of 2014–2016 with Seattle before being released in November 2016 to pursue opportunities in Japan.
Romero then moved to Japan to play in Nippon Professional Baseball. He joined the Orix Buffaloes in 2017, turning in a strong season with 26 home runs and 66 RBIs and earning a three-year contract extension in 2017. He continued to produce solid power numbers in 2018 and 2019. After becoming a free agent in December 2019, he signed with the Rakuten Golden Eagles for 2020, posting a productive season with 24 home runs. He became a free agent again in December 2020 and returned to the Buffaloes in 2021 on a one-year deal. His 2021 season was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and he left the team in August to prioritize his family.
In 2022 Romero signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and spent time with the Oklahoma City Dodgers in Triple-A, briefly being added to the MLB roster in June before being designated for assignment. He elected free agency after the season.
Romero then joined the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League in 2023, hitting well in 36 games. He was placed on the reserve list in March 2024 and did not appear in a game that season, though Diablos Rojos won the Serie del Rey. Romero retired from professional baseball on November 19, 2024.
Stefen’s younger brother, Santiago Romero, was also a high school baseball teammate of his.
