Statue of Benito Juárez (Fresno)
The Statue of Benito Juárez is a bronze sculpture in Courthouse Park, Fresno, California. It honors Mexican President Benito Juárez and was gifted to Fresno by José Murat Casab, who was Governor of Oaxaca at the time. The idea came from the local Oaxacan community in Fresno. Oralia Maceda and her husband Rufino Domínguez, working with the Frente Indígena de Organizaciones Binacionales and the Binational Center for Oaxacan Indigenous Development, helped raise funds and obtain permits to place the statue. Fresno County Supervisor Juan Arámbula presented the proposal to the county Board of Supervisors, and it passed unanimously. The statue was erected in March 2003. The base carries an inscription in Spanish: "Entre las naciones como entre los individuos El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz." Lic. Benito Juárez García Benemérito de las Américas 1806 - 1872 Marzo de 2003. Celebrations for Juárez's birthday are held at the statue.
