Splitwise
Splitwise is an online expense-splitting app you can use on the web or with a mobile app. It helps groups track shared bills and see exactly who owes whom. You can create groups with friends, add expenses, and Splitwise keeps a clear record of everyone’s shares, making it easy to settle payments.
The app was created by Splitwise Inc. in Providence, Rhode Island. It launched in February 2011 as SplitTheRent and was later renamed Splitwise. In September 2013, it added Venmo so people could pay each other, and in April 2024 it teamed up with Tink to allow bank transfers directly in the app. Splitwise stores user data in the cloud.
Splitwise received funding over the years: $1.4 million in December 2014, $5 million in October 2016, and $20 million in a March 2021 Series A led by Insight Partners. Its main competitor in the U.S. is Venmo.
Opinions about Splitwise vary. Some critics say exact splitting can create tension among friends, while others note it reduces stress in group travel and makes bill-paying easier. Some observers urge keeping money conversations simple, such as confirming that bills are split evenly.
