Spirapril

Spirapril is an ACE inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure. It is a prodrug, meaning it is converted in the body to the active form spiraprilat, which helps relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. It belongs to the dicarboxy ACE inhibitors group and is sold under brand names like Renormax.

Spirapril was patented in 1980 and approved for medical use in 1995. It is taken by mouth.

A notable feature of spirapril is that it is eliminated by both the liver and the kidneys, which may be helpful for people with kidney problems. However, the effects on kidney function are not entirely clear. It is classified as pregnancy category D, so it should be avoided during pregnancy.

Pharmacokinetics: about 50% oral bioavailability and a half-life of roughly 30–35 hours.
