Speikboden (South Tyrol)
Speikboden is a mountain massif in the Central Eastern Alps, located in South Tyrol, Italy. It sits between the Weißenbach, Mühlwald and Ahrntal valleys and forms the eastern part of the western Zillertal Alps. The highest point, also called Speikboden, reaches 2,517 meters. Other notable peaks include Seewassernock (2,516 m), Große Nock (2,400 m), Kleine Nock (2,227 m) and Gornerberg (2,475 m). Villages in the area include Lappach, Luttach, Mühlwald, Sand in Taufers, St. Johann and Weißenbach.
Speikboden hosts a popular ski area with about 40 kilometers of slopes. The area has two zones: the long valley run Michl, a red slope, and the upper Speikboden Alm with four red slopes, two blue slopes and three black slopes, reachable by lifts from the gondola. The valley slope is about 7 kilometers long. There is a nursery slope with magic carpets for beginners, and the lifts run in summer as well. A 400-meter snowpark is located near the Seenock piste, and there are two toboggan runs from the top station to Weißenbach and Luttach, with a free ski bus back.
The region is famous for cross‑country paragliding, helped by pilot Kurt Eder. Flights are possible year round, with June–September offering the best conditions. Strong north winds can be challenging, but the Durreck range provides some protection.
Hiking began here in the 1870s. Key huts include Sonklarhütte at 2,420 meters (built in 1876; rebuilt in 1899). The Daimerweg and Kellerbauerweg trails helped connect huts, and today the network totals about 90 kilometers of hiking routes, maintained by the lift company. The two main via ferratas are the regular via ferrata to the summit (350 meters of vertical gain) and a child-friendly version.
Together with Klausberg, Speikboden forms Skiworld Ahrntal, offering 21 lifts and 74 kilometers of slopes from about 950 to 2,510 meters. In summer, tickets are also valid for Speikboden and Klausberg.
