Southern Border Region
The Southern Border Region is one of nine economic regions used in California. It includes San Diego County and Imperial County, both on the Mexican border, with San Diego as the largest city. It sits next to the Southern California Region, which includes Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Ventura counties. These regions were created around 1998 when the California Regional Economies Project defined nine regional economies. The California Economic Strategy Panel uses employer data on jobs and wages for public policy, planning, and programs. For example, a 2009 report noted the region’s GDP had grown 68.5% in five years. Other agencies, such as the California Public Utilities Commission, also publish reports on the region.
