Carmit
Carmit is a community settlement in the northern Negev desert of Israel, near the Kramim forest and part of the Meitar local council. It was founded in 2005 to house new immigrants from North America, and there were plans for an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood. In 2005, the Southern District Planning and Building Commission approved 739 housing units for Carmit’s Phase A. The first homes opened in 2013, with the goal of growing to more than 2,500 housing units, each about 1/8 acre (half a dunam) in size. Absorption and development are led by the Jewish National Fund, the Jewish Agency, the Meitar local council, and the OR Movement, which has established six new communities in the Negev, West Bank, and Galilee: Sansana (West Bank), Merchav Am, Mitzpe Ilan, Haruv, Be’er Milka, and Giv’ot Bar. In 2011, land plots for Carmit began to be marketed.
