Franchise history: The Thunderbirds started as a junior program in 1999 and operated under that name through 2002. For the 2002–03 season they became the Soo Jr. Greyhounds to align with the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, but returned to the Soo Thunderbirds in 2003 and have kept the name since. They have won playoff championships in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2022.

Key achievements: In 2012, the Thunderbirds won the NOJHL championship and the Dudley Hewitt Cup, earning a spot at the Royal Bank Cup in Humboldt, where they reached the semifinals. They also won NOJHL titles in 2014–15 and 2015–16, and claimed the Dudley Hewitt Cup again in 2015. After a series of ownership changes following the 2015–16 season, the team moved to the John Rhodes Community Centre, updated its logo and colors, and in 2021 was sold to a group led by former NHL player Trevor Daley and Cole and Lee-Anne Jarrett. Cole Jarrett became head coach again, with Jamie Henderson returning as general manager.
