Slovak Figure Skating Championships
The Slovak Figure Skating Championships are Slovakia’s annual national competition. They are organized by the Slovak Figure Skating Association and crown the country’s champions in figure skating.
History in brief: The first official Slovak Championships were held in December 1993 in Banská Bystrica after Czechoslovakia split. Slovakia joined the International Skating Union in 1993. The early Slovak champions included skaters from the country’s first clubs, such as the Bratislava Skating Club founded in 1871. Over time, the national championships were held together with other countries as Four Nationals. The Czech and Slovak championships were combined starting in 2006–07, then Poland joined in 2008–09 to form Three Nations, and Hungary joined in 2013–14 to create the Four Nations format.
Current format: The senior championships, along with the junior-level pair skating and ice dancing championships, are held together with Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic as part of the Four Nations Figure Skating Championships. Junior men’s and ladies’ singles compete in a Slovakia-only event. Medals are awarded in men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pair skating, and ice dance at both the senior and junior levels, though not every discipline is held every year due to participation numbers. The host country rotates among the four nations, and results are combined to form each country’s national podiums.
Records and notes:Leading title holders include Adam Hagara, Róbert Kažimík, and Marco Klepoch with five men’s titles each; Zuzana Babiaková (nine titles) in women’s singles; Oľga Beständigová and Jozef Beständig in pairs (seven titles); and Lukáš Csölley in ice dance (nine titles). Some titles were earned with different partners.
