Sicca Veneria was an ancient Christian bishopric in Africa Proconsularis and a suffragan of the Bishop of Carthage. The bishop’s seat was in Colonia Julia Veneria Cirta Nova Iulia, a Roman town. The diocese was established in early Christianity and stopped functioning after the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb. Today it survives as a titular see of the Roman Catholic Church. The current bishop is Lajos Varga of Hungary. Remains at El Kef include the ruins of a cathedral, a baptistery, Christian burials, and many inscriptions.
