Octanoyl chloride
Octanoyl chloride, also known as capryloyl chloride or caprylic acid chloride, is an eight-carbon acyl chloride with a straight chain. It’s used as a reagent in organic synthesis to transfer the octanoyl group to other molecules, such as forming esters or amides from alcohols or amines.
Formula and properties:
- Chemical formula: C8H15ClO
- Molar mass: 162.66 g/mol
- Structure: straight-chain eight-carbon acyl chloride
Hazards:
- It is corrosive and can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs.
- Inhalation can be dangerous or fatal.
- It reacts with water to produce hydrochloric acid, so it should be handled in a well-ventilated area with proper protective equipment, and stored tightly closed away from moisture.
