Shields, Dodge County, Wisconsin
Shields is a rural town in Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States. It covers about 27 square miles (69.8 km2), mostly land with a small amount of water, and sits about 814 feet (248 meters) above sea level. The unincorporated community of Richwood lies within Shields. The town was named after James Shields, a 19th-century general and U.S. senator.
As of the 2000 census, Shields had 554 residents and 198 households. The population was nearly all White. There were 158 families living in the town. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.16. About 35% of households had children under 18, and 68% were married couples. Non-family households made up about 20%, and individuals living alone accounted for 18% of all households; 6.6% of households had someone 65 or older.
The town’s population was spread across ages, with 28% under 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% 65 or older. The median age was 39. For every 100 females, there were about 114 males.
Income levels were modest: the median household income was $50,000, and the median family income was $55,375. Males had a median income of $37,109 compared with $25,000 for females. The per capita income was $21,218. Only a small share of residents lived below the poverty line.
