Shelly Steely, born Anne Rochelle Steely on October 23, 1962, in Reading, Pennsylvania, is a former American long-distance runner. She ran for the Florida Gators in college, excelling in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and later moving to road racing. She earned five All-American honors, nine All-SEC honors, and was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Steely’s international debut came in cross country. In 1985, she helped the United States win the women’s team title at the World Cross Country Championships in Lisbon. She also competed in 1989 and 1990 and won the Cross Internacional de Venta de Baños in Spain. On the track, she won the U.S. 3,000 meters titles outdoors in 1991 and indoors in 1992. She reached the finals at the 1991 World Championships and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, finishing seventh in the Olympic 3,000 meters. Her personal best for the distance outdoors was 8:41.28.

After a decline in performance and a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism, Steely made a comeback in 1998. She won national road titles at 25 kilometers and 10 miles, and placed well at the USA Outdoors 10,000 meters. She also competed at the Goodwill Games and the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships that year, and later in 1999–2000 before retiring to study education.

Shelly trained in New Mexico and represented the Mizuno Track Club during her career. Her story includes national titles, Olympic and world-level competition, a serious health challenge, and a notable return to athletics.
