Shekhawat is a prominent sub-clan of the Kachhwaha Rajputs in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, India. The clan traces its origins to Maharao Shekha, a 15th‑century ruler after whom the area is named. Rao Shekha established a principality in Shekhawati, covering parts of today’s Jhunjhunu, Sikar and Churu districts. The Shekhawat Rajputs grew powerful in the 15th century, were known for their martial skill, and resisted Mughal expansion. They ruled the region for about 500 years until the princely states were integrated into independent India in the 1940s–50s. Today, Shekhawat is a common surname, especially among Indian defence forces.
