Shastri (2024 film)
Shastri is a 2024 Bengali satirical fantasy action comedy directed by Pathikrit Basu. It is based on Debarati Mukhopadhyay’s short story Dolgobindo Babur Chashmah. The film is produced by Soham Chakraborty, Nispal Singh and Bajrang Lal Churiwala under Surinder Films, Soham’s Entertainment and Creative Solutions Pvt Ltd.
The story follows Parimal, a factory worker who gains the power to see the future, and how this gift changes his life as he faces the conflict between astrology and science. Mithun Chakraborty stars in the title role, with an ensemble cast including Soham Chakraborty, Debashree Roy, Rajatava Dutta, Anirban Chakraborty, Saswata Chatterjee, Kaushik Sen, Sauraseni Maitra and Ayush Das.
Key crew includes Indraadip Dasgupta (music and background score), Aritra Banerjee (screenplay), Arnab Bhaumik (dialogues), Gopi Bhagat (cinematography) and MD Kalam (editing). The film runs 132 minutes and is in Bengali.
Shastri released in theaters on 8 October 2024, coinciding with Durga Puja, and was distributed by Surinder Films. The production began in early 2024 in Kolkata. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised Mithun Chakraborty’s performance and the film’s direction, while some critics noted extra songs as a drawback.
