Shadyside is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh’s East End. It covers about 0.9 square miles and has three ZIP codes: 15206, 15213, and 15232. The area gets its name from an old Pennsylvania Railroad station that was named for its shady lanes.

The neighborhood combines plenty of shops, dining, and culture with residential streets of historic homes and modern apartments. The main shopping streets are Walnut Street, Ellsworth Avenue, and South Highland Avenue, all within easy walking distance of each other. Walnut Street features many national chains and local shops, and it’s home to Pamela’s Diner, which served President Obama and his guests in 2009. The Jam on Walnut is a summer concert series, and the street also hosts The Art Festival on Walnut Street.

Ellsworth Avenue is filled with smaller, locally owned stores, including vintage shops, an art gallery, beauty salons, and restaurants. It also has one of Pittsburgh’s gay-friendly bars. South Highland Avenue has upscale design and furniture stores, plus restaurants, and it connects to East Liberty’s Eastside retail complex.

Shadyside is known for its mix of residents, including affluent families, young professionals, artists, students, and renters. The area features Victorian mansions alongside modern apartments and condos, and its compact layout makes the three corridors walkable.

Public transit includes Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses, with express stops on Negley Avenue (between Ellsworth and Centre) and on Ellsworth Avenue at Shady Avenue.

Schools in the area include The Liberty School (public, pre-K to 5) with about 375 students and a 16:1 student-teacher ratio; Winchester Thurston School (private, co-ed) with campuses in Allison Park and Shadyside; and The Ellis School (private girls’ school) founded in 1916. The Liberty School is a magnet program that draws a diverse student body, and both Winchester Thurston and The Ellis School are part of the Pittsburgh Consortium of Independent Schools. Shadyside Academy began here in 1883 but moved its upper grades to Fox Chapel; its junior campus remains in nearby Point Breeze.

The Shadyside Action Coalition (SAC) is a local nonprofit founded in 1973 to help preserve the community’s values, safety, planning, parking, quality of life, and future development.

Shadyside was named after a local farm and was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1868.
